Womenade Sisters of Servanthood (SOS), was established in February 2006 after the founder, Shelley Lakes, witnessed women in her church community who were dealing with crisis in the areas of health and finances. She was inspired to do something by an article she had read two years earlier about a grassroots organization in Washington D.C. called Womenade. Started by Dr. Amy Kossoff, a medical doctor, the original Womenade was started in response to the concern that the patients she was treating medically were often in social and financial crisis as well as dealing with overwhelming health issues.
With the help of some friends, Shelley Lakes organized a community potluck modeled after those held by Dr. Kossoff to bring awareness to the subject and give women the opportunity to come together for fun and fellowship while making small donations to help those in crisis. Womenade SOS was born, adopting the motto: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade; with women, make Womenade.” The purpose of Womenade SOS is to follow the example set forth by Dr. Kossoff, specifically targeting women in crisis or organizations that provide crisis intervention to women. top |
